Overview

Selection Toolbar is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use our browser extension.

Information We Collect

Usage Analytics

We collect anonymous usage data to understand how our extension is used and to improve the user experience. This includes:

• Install, update and uninstall events (with the extension version)
• When the toolbar is shown, and which kinds of content were detected (for example "a link" or "a price"), never the text itself
• Which actions are used, and which AI assistant a prompt is sent to
• Which settings are changed (the setting name, not free-text values)
• Error reports and technical diagnostics
• Operating system, and a random identifier stored in the extension so repeat use can be counted

These events are sent from the extension's background process to our analytics provider. Until you sign in they are anonymous: tied to the random identifier only, never to an account or email address. If you choose to sign in, the counts from then on are linked to your account, so we can see which signed-in features are used. Signing out returns them to anonymous.

Highlights and Notes

When you highlight text or add it to a note, the extension stores that text, a few characters around a highlight so it can be found again, the page's address and title, the colour, and any note you write. All of it stays in your browser's own extension storage on your machine unless you turn on sync (below). It is never sent to us or to anyone else, it is not included in analytics, and you can copy or download it as Markdown, or delete it, from the Highlights panel at any time. Removing the extension removes it.

Premium and Sync

Sync is part of Premium and is off until you switch it on in the extension's settings, after signing in. With sync on, your highlights (the highlighted text, a few characters around it, the page's address and title, the colour and your note), your scratch notes, your toolbar settings and your saved prompts are stored in your account so that your other browsers can download them. They are stored with Google Firebase (Cloud Firestore, United States) under your account only, and readable only with your sign-in; the developer can reach the database as its administrator and does so only to help you when you ask. Nothing from sync is used for analytics or shared with anyone. You can turn sync off at any time, delete the synced copy from the same settings page, or write to us to delete your account and everything stored with it. The copy on your devices is yours either way.

Payment for Premium is taken by Dodo Payments, our merchant of record. Dodo collects the details it needs for the payment (your email address, country and postcode, and your card or other payment method, which we never see) under Dodo's own privacy policy. We receive a customer and subscription reference and the subscription's status, which we keep alongside your account to know that Premium is on. Optional Account Sign-in

You can sign in with Google from the extension's settings page. This is optional: everything the toolbar does without an account stays free and available without one. Signing in unlocks a few extras, currently Ask Claude, Ask Perplexity, and opening ChatGPT in a temporary chat.

When you sign in, the extension stores your Google account's email address, name and account ID, and nothing else: no profile picture, no contacts. They are kept in the extension's own storage and with our sign-in service so you can be recognised on your next visit, and they are attached to your usage counts in our analytics service (see above) so those counts can be read per account. They are never shared with anyone and never used to send you email. Signing out removes them from the extension and stops the linking; to have them deleted from our records as well, email us at the address below.

Install and Uninstall Pages

After installing, a welcome page on this site opens once. When the extension is removed, your browser opens a short optional survey on this site. The survey link carries only the random identifier above and coarse install statistics (install date, number of actions used, extension version). Anything you type into the survey is sent to us as written, so please do not include personal information.

This Website

Separately from the extension, this website (selection-toolbar.r44j.dev) uses an analytics service to understand how the page performs. On this site only, and never on any other site you visit, we record:

• Page views, clicks, scroll depth and time on page
• A session replay: a reconstruction of your visit to this website, built from the page's own layout and your pointer, scroll and click activity. Anything you type into a form is masked before it leaves your browser, and the uninstall survey page is excluded from replay entirely.
• How you arrived (referring site and any campaign parameters in the link)
• Browser, device type, and an approximate location (country or city) derived from your IP address
• A random visitor identifier stored in a cookie on this domain, so a repeat visit is not counted twice

This data is anonymous, is not linked to an account or a person profile, and is used only to judge whether the page explains the extension well. It never includes what you select, type or browse anywhere outside this website. If your browser sends a Do Not Track signal, or you use a content blocker, this collection does not happen.

What We Don't Collect

We want to be clear about what we do NOT collect:

• Your selected text content or any personal data you interact with
• Your browsing history or visited websites
• Personal information, other than the email address and account ID you choose to share by signing in (see above)
• Passwords, credit card numbers, or other sensitive data
• Your precise location. Like any web request, events arrive at our analytics provider from a network address, which is used to derive an approximate region and nothing else.

How We Use Your Information

The anonymous data we collect is used exclusively to:

• Improve the extension's performance and reliability
• Understand which features are most valuable to users
• Fix bugs and technical issues
• Plan new features and improvements
• Ensure compatibility across different browsers and systems

Data Storage and Security

All analytics data is:

• Stored securely using industry-standard encryption
• Anonymized and cannot be traced back to individual users
• Automatically deleted after a reasonable retention period
• Protected by strict access controls

Third-Party Services

Our extension may interact with third-party services when you use certain features (and, with Premium, Google Firebase for sync and Dodo Payments for payment, described above):

• Search: Selected text is opened in the search engine you chose (Google, DuckDuckGo, Bing, Brave, Perplexity or YouTube)
• AI assistants: When you use an AI action, the prompt and selected text are opened in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity in a new tab
• Translation, dictionary, maps, Wikipedia: Open the relevant Google, Merriam-Webster or Wikipedia page in a new tab
• Currency conversion: Exchange rates are fetched from the Frankfurter API (frankfurter.app). Only the two currency codes are sent, never the amount or the page
• Sign-in: Google sign-in is handled by our sign-in service. Only used if you choose to sign in

These interactions are direct between you and those services - we don't store or process any data from these interactions.

Your Rights and Choices

You have the right to:

• Uninstall the extension at any time to stop all data collection; the uninstall survey is optional
• Contact us with questions about our privacy practices
• Request information about our data handling practices

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically to stay informed about how we're protecting your privacy.
